Many people cannot distinguish surround sound from stereo sound. Basically speaking, a surround system is just having more audio channels than only two a stereo system has, and playing this audio through multiple speakers placed in certain different directions, creates an immersive listening experience.
There was a surround system on the market back in the 1940s when Disney created their movie with a 54-channel audio track. They call this technology Fantasound, but it was too expensive to be widely spread since it required theatres and cinemas to have 54 speakers to completely fit the audio. The technology finally died out in mid 20th century until Dolby came out. These days, Dolby has grown into a giant in the surround sound industry and as their collaboration with Apple Music, surround sound is finally finding its place in the music industry.
